Refugees and refugee policy

The history of refugees and their acceptance, or rejection, in Central Eastern Europe is still only underdeveloped. The view that refugees fled the region because of political oppression, poverty, ethnic cleansing or genocide usually prevails over an examination of when and under what conditions refugees found refuge there. Research on refugees cannot be separated from the history of the majority society and how it developed its solidarity with others, defined citizenship, or created humanitarian organizations. At the Masaryk Institute and the Archives of the CAS, the topic of refugees is comparatively researched, especially in the framework of the project Unlikely refuge? Refugees and citizens in East-Central Europe in the 20th century, supported by the European Research Council (ERC) and led by Michal Frankl.
